Smartphone Buying Guide - Part1
2008 ended as the year of ‘SmartPhones’ and i am very sure that 2009 will bring smarter phones :-p . All the global mobile manufacturers are playing their part very seriously. No matter how better a Smartphone they produce, their competitor will bring a rival to beat it. with that being consideration, there are certain things that you must look into, before buying your smartphone, if you want the best. coz, There is no point in whining after you made a move.
Operating System
This is the most essential part of your decision. Your operating system decides whether you advance or not. Some operating systems provide only core functions, while others perform more than that. There are operating systems which do not provide third party application development, in which case, you have to solely depend on the manufacturer for all your needs (which is the worst part). The following are the most common types of smartphone operating systems.
Symbian, Linux, Windows Mobile, Java, Garnet OS (Palm OS), Apple OS, Blackberry, Android.
From the above listes operating system, my preferred choices would be, Symbian, Apple, Blackberry and Android. As you can see, symbian is the mostly used one, and the one that perfectly sync’s with your PC. Your operating system also depicts your use of smartphone. For ex, if i am a business user, i would prefer RIM’s Blackberry.
Processor
Next to your operating system comes the processor. Basically, The speed of the processor determines how quick you can switch between applications and ofcourse, the response time. Nowdays, 300MHz+ processors have become common. One more thing you should be aware is that, the faster your processor is, the faster your battery’s power drained. so, don’t always opt for the fastest processor.
Connectivity
Conncectivity is another important aspect of your smartphone. Bluetooth is a damn must feature nowadays. Note that, there are various flavours in bluetooth. If hands-free is just enough for, you need not worry. If you want to stream music, you’ll need A2DP (a.k.a Bluetooth Stereo). Wi-fi is necessary for your wireless internet and e-mail. HSPDA is a new connectivity feature which provides mobile broadband wherever you go. GPS, GPRS, WAP and FM Radio are other important features. And at last, with the gaining popularity of 3G, you don’t want to lose it either. If you want all these conncectivity features, you’ll have to spend a lot. so, choose only what you really need.
